Dr. Emmet Florence explains the science behind the treatment of hemorrhoids.

“Hemorrhoids, while not considered a dangerous medical condition, can provide an embarrassing problem to frequent sufferers. Frequently accompanied by painful itching and burning, hemorrhoids are caused by swollen veins in the rectal (internal hemorrhoids) or anal area (external hemorrhoids). If they are not treated properly, it can lead to painful surgery or freezing treatment for removal. Hemorrhoids are more likely to occur during times of stress, pregnancy, or poor diet.

To alleviate symptoms of hemorrhoids, it is recommended that you take fiber products or supplements that contain psyllium, a stool softening agent. Certain herbs such as butcher’s broom, horse chestnut, and bilberry are often prescribed to improve circulation and prevent and treat existing hemorrhoids. Creams with a mild anesthesia are often used to treat the itching and pain associated with hemorrhoids, but do not cure or prevent them from recurring.

When shopping for a treatment, remember to distinguish between creams and salves that temporarily alleviate the symptoms, and products that contain the necessary herbal and nutritional ingredients that can help heal hemorrhoids and prevent them from recurring.

Consult your physician if you continue to have pain during bowel movements or frequent rectal bleeding for periods longer than a month, as it can be a warning sign of colon cancer or other serious health problems.”
